Last floor of Tate modern - the best view if City! Avva asked about London about a year ago: http://avva.livejournal.com/1537647.html. Lots of good advice. I left mine too:
Walk to Tate modern from Parliament: incredible views of London City. The museum is the absolute must.
*Go to opera: much better than any musical and can be quite cheap if you buy tickets on the show day in the theater box office. There are discounts if you have international students card. I went to opera for 12 pounds, my seat was in stools. Musical would cost you 30-40 pounds at least.
*The mentioned above wine place on Embankment is absolutely great.
*Near British museum you have Sir John Soane's Museum: it's also free and lovely. it would take ~1hour
*If you like live music, check out daily newspapers for latest gigs. Some places would have very cheap standing tickets if you arrive right before the show.
*Regrading underground: you can get Oyster card. You charge the card with some money. You'd be charged the min(N of trips*cost of each tip, daily/weekly/trips outside of London center pass). If your card would run out of money in the middle of the trip, when exiting a station you'd be asked to charge some more money. I found it very convenient: when you get weekly pass it's only for a week, even if you don't take underground at all some of the days and you might need pay some extra if you go outside of the london center.
*Coffee: In my opinion Pret'a'menage (??) is the best "fast" coffee place (much better than Starbucks) Very good sandwiches also. Ideal for quick tourist lunch.
*Food: eating out is quite expensive. But each supermarket has tons of sandwiches and prepared food you can buy and have great picnic meals, especially in Kew gardens.
Ойстер-кард очень рекомендую, не смотрите на начальную цену самой карточки в три фунта, не подсчитывайте, окупится ли, потому что в конце, если не нужна на сувениры, ее можно сдать - и получить полный возврат денег. Нам понравилась прогулка по Темзе на кораблике в ланч, с закусками и вином.
она - ваще. Т.е ее покупаешь за те самые три фунта, а потом подзаряжаешь на определенную сумму денюх. И пользуешься, пока не надоест. Почему-то пока пользуешься ею - проезд существенно дешевле оказывается. Типа, не для понаехавших :) Но вообще, лондонская система оплаты транспорта - сложна и запутана, многое выясняется только опытным путем :)
У нас гостиница в Docklands, похоже, что туда ходит какой-то особый тип транспорта, - вроде бы как метро, но вроде и не совсем относящееся к сети метро.
Буду очень рад! Хотя трудно сказать, какой язык нам нужен :) Нам с женой лучше по-русски, старшей и средней дочкам вообще все равно, младшей лучше на иврите.
- Primrose Hill (follow signs, Chalk Farm tube station). The best view over London. Roll a fag, meditate. Have coffee. Take pictures. Also quite a hip artistic area.
